National Healthy Fats Day celebrates traditional animal fats such as pure lard, beef tallow, duck fat, and goose fat. The observance reflects the Healthy Fats Coalition’s educational mission to encourage discussion of minimally processed animal fats and their place in cooking and the American diet. According to the Coalition, these fats can be used for baking, frying, and other cooking applications, while adding color, texture, and flavor. A 2018 announcement described March 21 as the first annual observance, timed to coincide with the arrival of spring.
The Healthy Fats Coalition established the day in 2018. It is one of three “healthy fat awareness” days promoted by the Coalition, alongside National Beef Tallow Day and National Lard Day. Its suggested message is simple: taste the difference for yourself. The observance recurs annually on March 21.
How to Observe National Healthy Fats Day
Celebrate by cooking or baking with one of the fats highlighted by the Healthy Fats Coalition, such as lard, beef tallow, duck fat, or goose fat. Try using it in a familiar dish and pay attention to the flavor, texture, and color it brings to the food. You can also learn more about the Coalition’s perspective on minimally processed animal fats and share what you discover with fellow cooks.
