National Sober Day, observed annually on September 14, celebrates sobriety and raises awareness about addiction. It offers an opportunity for people to renew their commitment to staying sober, begin a recovery journey, or show support for someone living in sobriety. The day also encourages open conversations that can reduce the stigma surrounding addiction and remind people that they are not alone.
Real Aligned Women established National Sober Day in 2019. The group describes itself as a “sisterhood for sobriety,” and the observance has been associated with National Sober Month. Whether someone is marking a first sober day or reflecting on years of recovery, September 14 is a time to recognize the strength, commitment, and support involved in the journey.
How to Observe National Sober Day
Celebrate by spending the day alcohol-free and choosing activities that do not revolve around drinking. Make a mocktail, host a tea, coffee, or mocktail tasting, or plan a game night, movie marathon, or another enjoyable gathering. Reach out to a friend or family member in recovery with a supportive message, and share how you plan to spend the day sober. If you are comfortable, use #NationalSoberDay to share encouragement or your own experience.
