National Sunday Supper Month

National Sunday Supper Month is observed throughout January and encourages families and friends to gather around the table for a shared meal, conversation, and connection. The focus is not on elaborate food, but on making time to cook, eat, and enjoy one another’s company. National Today describes it as a chance to plan weekly menus, try new recipes, and make Sunday supper a regular ritual.

The Sunday Supper Movement was founded by food blogger Isabel Laessig in 2012 after her oldest child left for college and she realized how much she valued their family meals. Laessig and eight other bloggers then held a virtual progressive dinner, with each participant sharing a dish and story. According to Laessig’s account of the movement, she established January as National Sunday Supper Month shortly afterward. Today, the month offers a simple invitation: set aside time for the people you love and reconnect over supper.

How to Observe National Sunday Supper Month

Celebrate by gathering family or friends for a Sunday meal in January. Cook together, invite everyone to contribute, and take turns hosting from week to week. Keep phones and screens away from the table so conversation can take center stage, share recipes with your guests, or explore a cuisine from another culture. National Day Calendar offers additional Sunday supper ideas.
