Image for Alcohol Awareness Month

Alcohol Awareness Month

Alcohol Awareness Month is observed each April to increase public awareness and understanding of alcoholism and alcohol-related issues, reduce stigma, and encourage communities to focus on prevention and treatment. The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (NCADD) has sponsored the observance since 1987. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s Campus Drug Prevention site describes its aims.

The month also highlights that treatment can be effective and that recognizing signs of alcohol-related problems may help people connect with information and support. These signs can include drinking alone or in secret, memory loss or blackouts, continuing to drink despite negative consequences, and losing interest in important activities. AdventHealth University’s overview discusses the observance’s focus on awareness, prevention, treatment, and recognizing possible warning signs.

How to Observe Alcohol Awareness Month

Celebrate by learning about alcohol-related problems, the signs that someone may need help, and the importance of reducing stigma. Have a thoughtful conversation with a friend or family member, share reliable information, and support people who are seeking treatment. If you or someone you know is struggling with alcohol, AdventHealth University’s overview recommends learning about treatment and contacting a local treatment center or support resource.
