Whole Grains Month takes place every September and encourages people to discover the flavor, variety, and nutritional value of whole grains. The Whole Grains Council describes its annual campaign as a time to share recipes, health information, cooking tips, and other resources. Whole grain choices include breads, breakfast cereals, pasta, pilafs, crackers, soups, brown rice, quinoa, barley, oats, and more. (Whole Grains Council)
The observance was established by the Whole Grains Council in 2007. In past campaigns, the council has highlighted new grains, sampling activities, recipe contests, educational materials, and ways to identify whole grain products while shopping. (Whole Grains Council) Whole grains contain the bran, germ, and endosperm of the grain kernel, while refined grains have had some of those parts removed. (Oldways)
How to Observe Whole Grains Month
Celebrate by trying a whole grain you have not cooked before, or make a simple swap such as brown rice for white rice, whole grain pasta for regular pasta, or whole grain bread for white bread. Bake with whole grain flour, add oats to breakfast, or use a grain in a pilaf, soup, or salad. Explore the Whole Grains Council’s recipes, printable resources, and shopping guidance to learn more about whole and refined grains.
