National Irish Coffee Week celebrates Irish coffee, a warm cocktail made with hot coffee, Irish whiskey, sugar, and a layer of cream. The observance takes place during the fourth full week of January, making it a fitting time to enjoy the drink’s rich, comforting flavors. Irish Coffee Week is also described as leading up to National Irish Coffee Day on January 25.
Accounts of Irish coffee’s beginnings place its creation in the 1940s at Foynes, Ireland, where chef Joe Sheridan reportedly prepared coffee with whiskey and cream for weary transatlantic travelers. The drink later reached the United States through travel writer Stanton Delaplane and became associated with San Francisco’s Buena Vista in the early 1950s. The drink’s history is recounted by RTÉ. Its signature presentation features cream floating above the coffee, allowing the drinker to sip the hot, sweetened coffee through the cool topping.
How to Observe National Irish Coffee Week
Celebrate by making or ordering an Irish coffee during the week. Use hot coffee, Irish whiskey, sugar, and lightly whipped cream, then gently pour the cream over the back of a spoon so it floats on top. Enjoy it with friends, learn about Joe Sheridan and the drink’s Foynes origins, and drink responsibly.
