Traditionally, a young man gives a sweet pretzel—or a pretzel-shaped cake—to someone he loves. The Luxembourgish version is typically a puff pastry covered with fondant icing and almonds. If his feelings are returned, she gives him a decorated egg on Easter Sunday; if not, she gives him an empty basket. In leap years, the roles are reversed, with women presenting the pretzels and men responding with an egg or an empty basket.
