National Dessert Month celebrates sweet treats throughout October. It’s an opportunity to enjoy familiar favorites, try desserts from different cultures, and appreciate the creativity behind cakes, pies, cookies, pastries, puddings, and other confections. Preparing or sharing dessert can also bring people together.
The observance has been documented for decades: in 2009, Smithsonian Libraries and Archives highlighted National Dessert Month by exploring its collection of culinary-history books, including works about desserts served at the White House and in the 18th and 19th centuries. The month offers plenty of room for both indulgence and discovery, whether you prefer a classic recipe or an unfamiliar specialty.
How to Observe National Dessert Month
Celebrate by baking a new dessert, revisiting a favorite family recipe, or sampling a sweet treat from another country. Visit a local bakery to try something you wouldn’t usually make at home, or host a dessert swap so friends can share their creations. You can also set up a simple dessert bar and let everyone assemble their own treat.
