National Peppermint Bark Day celebrates peppermint bark, a seasonal confection made with layers of chocolate and peppermint and finished with crunchy peppermint candy pieces. Observed annually on December 1, the day offers a sweet way to welcome the holiday season.
Williams Sonoma’s version of peppermint bark debuted in 1998. According to the company, founder Chuck Williams and the Williams Sonoma Test Kitchen team developed its signature recipe after more than 20 rounds of testing. The recipe combines light and dark Guittard chocolate with triple-distilled peppermint oil. Williams Sonoma later announced the first annual celebration of National Peppermint Bark Day in 2021; its 2022 announcement described that year’s observance as the second annual celebration.
The confection has since inspired a range of peppermint bark-flavored products. In 2023, Williams Sonoma marked the 25th anniversary of its original peppermint bark and the third annual celebration of the day in a company announcement.
How to Observe National Peppermint Bark Day
Celebrate by enjoying a piece of peppermint bark, making a batch at home, or sharing some with friends and family. You can also try different chocolate-and-peppermint combinations or serve the candy alongside a favorite holiday activity. If you make your own, break it into pieces and package some as a festive homemade gift.
