National Fat-Free Living Month

National Fat-Free Living Month encourages people to examine their dietary habits throughout January. The observance was documented by at least 1999, when the Los Angeles Times included it in a list of January occasions. Reliable sources do not identify its founder or explain when it began.

Despite its name, the month should not be interpreted as a recommendation to eliminate all dietary fat. Fat supplies energy and performs essential functions in the body. Modern nutrition guidance focuses on the kinds of fat people consume: the American Heart Association recommends replacing sources of saturated fat with unsaturated fats as part of an overall healthy eating pattern. Reflecting this shift, the FDA’s updated definition of “healthy” allows nutrient-rich foods such as nuts, seeds, olive oil, salmon, and eggs to qualify despite their fat content.

How to Observe National Fat-Free Living Month

Celebrate by learning to distinguish among dietary fats instead of attempting a completely fat-free diet. Compare Nutrition Facts labels for saturated and trans fat, and try replacing butter or fatty meat with foods containing unsaturated fat, such as nuts, seeds, avocado, fish, or nontropical vegetable oils. Build meals around vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and healthy protein sources, and be cautious of foods marketed as “fat-free” that may still contain substantial sodium or added sugar. Anyone considering a restrictive diet should seek individualized advice from a qualified healthcare professional.
