National Celery Month

National Celery Month celebrates celery throughout March, inviting people to rediscover the crisp, versatile vegetable. Celery can be enjoyed raw or cooked, adding crunch to salads and snacks and flavor to soups, stews, casseroles, stuffings, and other dishes. It provides fiber, potassium, and vitamins A and C.

Believed to have originated in the Mediterranean, celery was used by early civilizations for medicinal purposes before becoming a food. The French began using it as a flavoring in the 17th century, when its stronger varieties were gradually cultivated into the milder vegetable familiar today. Celery also once held a more prominent place at the dining table: during the 19th and early 20th centuries, it was served in special celery vases, dishes, and trays.

The source and founder of National Celery Month have not been identified. Even so, March offers a chance to appreciate celery’s many uses, from a simple crunchy snack to a key ingredient in soups, salads, juices, and more.

How to Observe National Celery Month

Celebrate by adding celery to your meals in new ways. Enjoy fresh sticks with a dip or peanut butter, chop celery into a salad or soup, or try it in a smoothie or juice. You can also save the base of a celery bunch, place it in water, and watch it sprout for a small indoor gardening project.
