World Calvados Day

World Calvados Day celebrates calvados, the French apple brandy produced in Normandy. Made from apples—with a small amount of pear sometimes included—the fruit is washed, crushed, and pressed before the juice is fermented, distilled, and matured in oak casks for at least two years. Calvados is an Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée, so it must be produced using defined methods in designated areas.

Avallen Calvados launched the holiday in 2020 in partnership with Difford’s Guide and Mangrove UK. October was chosen during the apple harvest season, when the process of making calvados begins in Normandy’s orchards. The inaugural celebration featured specially created calvados cocktails and bar events around October 20. Today, the holiday offers an opportunity to learn about this Normandy spirit and raise a glass to its apple-based character.

How to Observe World Calvados Day

Celebrate by learning how calvados is made, then enjoy the spirit on its own or prepare a calvados-based cocktail. You could also explore the role of apples and pears in its production or share a toast to Normandy. If you choose to drink, do so responsibly.
