The cookie’s story traces back to Ruth Graves Wakefield at the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts, during the late 1930s. While preparing cookie dough, Wakefield added pieces of semi-sweet chocolate, expecting them to melt into the mixture. Instead, the chocolate softened while retaining its shape, creating the treat originally known as the Toll House Chocolate Crunch Cookie. The recipe became popular, appeared in Wakefield’s cookbook, and was later printed on Nestlé chocolate packaging through an agreement that provided Wakefield with a lifetime supply of chocolate.

Since then, chocolate chip cookies have inspired countless variations, including versions made with different types of chocolate and additional ingredients such as peanut butter. The week is a chance to appreciate the cookie’s history, experiment with recipes, and share a favorite batch.
