International Year of Millets

The International Year of Millets recognized 2023 as a time to raise awareness of millets’ contributions to food security, nutrition, and sustainable agriculture. Millets are a varied group of small-seeded grasses grown as cereal crops and food or fodder. They are well suited to dry, high-temperature conditions and generally require less water and agricultural input than many other cereals. Varieties include pearl millet (bajra), finger millet (ragi), sorghum (jowar), foxtail millet, and little millet. Vajiram & Ravi explains the characteristics and uses of millets.

The Government of India proposed the initiative, and the United Nations General Assembly declared 2023 the International Year of Millets with support from more than 70 countries. Its objectives included creating awareness of millets’ role in food security and nutrition, encouraging sustainable production and improved quality, and promoting investment in research and development. PWOnlyIAS summarizes the declaration and its objectives. India had previously designated 2018 as its National Year of Millets and rebranded the grains as “Nutri Cereals.” During 2023, planned activities included food fairs, exhibitions, awareness campaigns, farmer training, workshops, and other millet-focused events. Legacy IAS describes several of these initiatives.
