National Garden Month celebrates the joys of gardening and encourages people of all ages and experience levels to grow plants. Observed throughout April in the United States, it welcomes everyone from experienced gardeners to newcomers, whether they tend flower gardens, vegetable patches, container gardens, or indoor herbs. The month also highlights gardening as a way to bring people together, share knowledge, and encourage environmental stewardship.
The observance began as National Garden Week. In 1986, President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation designating the week of April 12–18, and the first celebration took place in 1987. The National Gardening Association resolved to expand the week into the entire month of April in 2002, and National Garden Month was celebrated for the first time in 2003. The National Garden Bureau’s account of the observance notes that gardening groups and organizations mark the month with educational activities, public events, plant sales, swaps, and seminars.
How to Observe National Garden Month
Celebrate by starting or refreshing a garden, even if your available space is only a balcony or windowsill. Plant flowers, herbs, or vegetables in containers; tidy an existing garden; or collect seeds and plan a future project. You can also volunteer at a community or school garden, join a local gardening club, share tips with friends and neighbors, or learn more about gardening through the National Garden Bureau’s resources.
