Coconut cream pie, an American favorite, is eaten and celebrated today with National Coconut Cream Pie Day. With a creamy coconut filling, whipped topping, and flaky crust, there are many things people love about the pie. Both coconut flakes and coconut milk may be used to make it. A number of takes on the original pie are popular too, like chocolate coconut cream pie and banana coconut cream pie, and coconut cream pie with other tropical fruits like pineapple or mango. Bakeries sometimes participate in National Coconut Cream Pie Day by giving out coconut pie samples and hosting pie-eating contests.
Coconut cream pie came into its own in the early twentieth century. Some forms of coconut pie date to the mid-nineteenth century, but not the coconut cream pie of today. Until the nineteenth century, when there were advancements in refrigeration and transportation, tropical fruits weren't available except in the Tropics. Bananas and pineapples became prevalent in Europe and America after these advancements, but still not coconuts. In the 1890s, a French export company in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) began to shred and dry coconut, making dried coconut flakes that could be transported easily. Dried coconut became popular in America near the turn of the twentieth century, paving the way for the coconut cream pie of today.
