National Produce Misting Day

National Produce Misting Day, observed annually on October 2, celebrates the technology that helps keep fruits and vegetables fresh in grocery stores. Automatic produce misting systems hydrate produce, helping it stay crisp and attractive while extending its shelf life.

Before these systems, grocers used labor-intensive methods such as soaking burlap potato sacks and laying them over produce overnight to keep it from drying out. In 1979, Jack Corrigan established the first patents for automatic produce misting systems. Corrigan, who owned the Carrot Top produce market and had a civil engineering background, combined those interests to develop his inventions. His son, Mike Corrigan, is credited with having the vision to bring the technology to market.

The Corrigan Corporation of America founded National Produce Misting Day in 2018 to share the story behind the engineering that brings fresh produce to local stores. The first observance was proclaimed for October 2 in 2019. Today, the celebration invites shoppers to appreciate the small but noticeable invention working above the produce aisle.
