National Sausage Month

National Sausage Month celebrates the variety and versatility of sausages throughout October. Bratwurst, chorizo, Italian sausage, kielbasa, and many other styles bring different seasonings, ingredients, and culinary traditions to the table. Sausages can be enjoyed on their own or added to dishes such as pizza, pasta, and breakfast plates.

The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council created the observance in 1994 as National Hot Dog and Sausage Month. The name was later shortened to National Sausage Month to distinguish it from National Hot Dog Month in July. October was chosen because it coincides with Oktoberfest, fall cookouts, and tailgating season, according to Premio Foods’ history of the observance.

The month offers an opportunity to try unfamiliar varieties, prepare new sausage dishes, and share meals with family and friends. In a 2008 announcement, the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council highlighted internationally flavored recipes as one way to celebrate, including dishes featuring chorizo and sausage-stuffed manicotti (the council’s announcement).

How to Observe National Sausage Month

Celebrate by cooking a sausage dish and trying a variety you have not had before. Compare styles such as bratwurst, chorizo, Italian sausage, and kielbasa, or invite friends and family to a tasting or cook-off. You can also learn more about how sausages are made by visiting a local butcher shop or looking for a sausage-making class. If you cook sausage, heat it to at least 160°F before eating, as recommended by Premio Foods.
