National Pecan Month celebrates the pecan throughout April. The pecan is the only major tree nut that grows naturally in North America, and it has long been used as a food by people living in the regions where it grows. The name “pecan” is described as a Native American word of Algonquin origin for nuts requiring a stone to crack, according to the National Pecan Shellers Association’s history of pecans.
The month’s history is separate from the much older history of the nut itself. In 1996, the National Pecan Shellers Association declared April to be National Pecan Month, according to one account of the observance. Pecans can be enjoyed on their own or used in many kinds of dishes, from snacks and desserts to savory recipes. The Cane River Pecan Company’s overview also traces the nut’s importance as a food source and commercial crop in North America.
