National Mushroom Month

National Mushroom Month celebrates mushrooms throughout September, highlighting their culinary versatility and their place in agriculture and education. Mushrooms are fungi rather than plants, and different varieties offer distinctive appearances, textures, and flavors. They can be served as a main dish, a side, or an ingredient that enhances other foods, making the month a chance to explore more than the familiar white button mushroom. The USDA’s celebration of National Mushroom Month also notes that mushrooms are grown commercially in the United States and warns that wild mushrooms should not be eaten without consulting an expert.

The observance is connected to the Mushroom Promotion, Research & Consumer Information Act of 1990, which created the Mushroom Council. September was declared National Mushroom Month through proclamations beginning in 1992, and the observance took effect in 1993. The Mushroom Council promotes mushroom research and public education, while the month also provides opportunities to learn about mushroom farming, nutrition, and the role of fungi in ecosystems. The council has offered recipes and regional mushroom features for September celebrations.

How to Observe National Mushroom Month

Celebrate by buying mushrooms from a trusted retailer and cooking them in a new way. Try a variety you have not eaten before, add mushrooms to a soup, sauce, pizza, omelet, or other dish, or compare the flavors and textures of several varieties. You can also learn how mushrooms are grown, explore their role in ecosystems, or use the Mushroom Council’s celebration resources for educational activities. Avoid eating wild mushrooms unless they have been identified by a qualified expert.
