National Caffeine Awareness Month

National Caffeine Awareness Month is observed throughout March and encourages people to better understand how much caffeine they consume and how it affects them. Caffeine is found in more than coffee: tea, sodas, energy drinks, chocolate, cocoa, smoothies, granola bars, baked goods, and some medications may also contain it. Because people tolerate caffeine differently, awareness includes considering both the amount consumed and personal responses such as sleep difficulties, nervousness, headaches, or increased heart rate. Brevard Health Alliance explains that the month is intended to raise awareness of caffeine intake and may help people reduce it.

The month was created in 2003 by the nonprofit Caffeine Awareness Alliance. According to Lompoc Valley Medical Center’s account, the organization’s goal was to provide objective, evidence-based information and advice about reducing the potential health, social, and economic harms associated with caffeine abuse and addiction. National Caffeine Awareness Month is therefore less about giving up a favorite drink altogether than about making informed, responsible choices.

How to Observe National Caffeine Awareness Month

Celebrate by keeping a daily tally of caffeine from coffee, tea, soda, energy drinks, chocolate, and other products. Read ingredient labels to look for less obvious sources, then consider gradually reducing your intake if you want to cut back; Brevard Health Alliance suggests making changes step by step. You can also switch one caffeinated drink for water or a lower-caffeine alternative and learn more about how caffeine affects your sleep, mood, and alertness. If you have concerns about your intake or symptoms, consult a healthcare professional.
