National Afternoon Tea Month

National Afternoon Tea Month is observed throughout April and celebrates the history, food, and culture surrounding afternoon tea. The tradition began in the United Kingdom nearly 200 years ago. In the 1830s, it was primarily enjoyed by the upper class, who had the leisure and means to pause for tea and biscuits. What began as a light snack gradually developed into a social meal with its own rituals and traditions, later spreading to restaurants, tea gardens, and other public places.

Afternoon tea helped fill the long gap between meals when supper was often served between 8 and 9 p.m. It commonly includes tea, crustless finger sandwiches, scones, small cakes, pastries, and spreads such as clotted cream, lemon curd, jams, and jellies. English Breakfast and Earl Grey are often served, although many other teas may be included.

Tea Tea and Company founded National Afternoon Tea Month in 2022 to celebrate tea culture and inspire renewed interest in afternoon tea traditions. The month is also an opportunity to enjoy this social occasion with friends and family, whether at home or at a tearoom, restaurant, tea garden, or another venue that offers afternoon tea.

How to Observe National Afternoon Tea Month

Celebrate by hosting an afternoon tea at home with tea, finger sandwiches, scones, pastries, and your favorite spreads. Try several varieties of tea, or visit a local tearoom, restaurant, or tea garden that serves afternoon tea. You can also learn more about the food, rituals, and culture surrounding this leisurely meal, then share it with friends or family.
