National Popcorn Poppin' Month

National Popcorn Poppin’ Month celebrates popcorn throughout the month of October. With its salty crunch and unmistakable “pop, pop, pop,” popcorn has been enjoyed in many forms for centuries. Early explorers in the 1500s described Native peoples roasting corn until it popped and compared the result to a “white flower”; the popped corn was eaten and also strung for decoration, according to a history and activity guide from Celebrate Picture Books.

Popcorn was even eaten as a cereal with milk before the rise of familiar breakfast cereals, and its popularity grew during the Great Depression because it was an affordable treat. The month had been observed for more than 30 years when then Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman made it official in 1999, as reported by Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance.

How to Observe National Popcorn Poppin' Month

Celebrate by popping a bowl and enjoying it salted, buttered, sweetened, or with a new flavor combination. Learn how heat turns a kernel into fluffy popcorn, or try a popcorn-themed activity with children, such as racing a piece of popcorn across paper using only air from a straw. For a hands-on game, Celebrate Picture Books suggests a “Popcorn Blast-Off” game using cotton-filled socks, a towel, and plenty of imagination.
