National Fish & Chip Day celebrates the beloved British combination of battered fish and chips. In the UK, it takes place on the first Friday in June and has been observed since 2015.
Fish and chips became a popular, affordable meal among working-class communities in the 19th century, with fish-and-chip shops appearing in the 1860s. Cod and haddock are commonly used, while the chips are thick-cut potatoes. The dish is often served with accompaniments such as salt and vinegar, mushy peas, tartar sauce, or curry sauce.
The day was created by the National Edible Oil Distributors’ Association (NEODA) to give fish and chips a national spotlight and recognize the people involved in bringing the meal to the table. That includes fishermen, farmers, suppliers, fish-and-chip shops, restaurants, and other parts of the industry. Friday was chosen because of the long association between the day and eating fish.
