International Laverbread Day

International Laverbread Day celebrates laverbread, a Welsh food made by cooking laver—a red Porphyra seaweed found along Wales’s rocky coastline. Despite its name, it isn’t sliced bread; laverbread is a soft, savory seaweed paste. It is also known as bara lawr and “Welshman’s caviar,” and may be considered either a delicacy or an acquired taste.

Welsh people have cooked laver into laverbread for centuries. Traditionally, it is rolled in oatmeal before frying or spread on toast, while it can also be added to soups, salads, vegetables, eggs, and even baked goods. The holiday highlights laverbread’s history, Welsh heritage, and culinary versatility.

The Pembrokeshire Beach Food Company founded International Laverbread Day in 2021 to share its love of laver. The first observance was proclaimed for April 14, with the day continuing annually from 2022.

How to Observe International Laverbread Day

Celebrate by trying laverbread on April 14 and incorporating it into a meal. Spread it on toast, roll it in oatmeal before frying, or add it to soups, salads, vegetables, eggs, or bread. You can also learn more about laverbread’s connection to Welsh coastal food traditions and share the experience with someone who has never tasted this distinctive seaweed dish.
