International Cake Pop Day

Cake pops have their day today with International Cake Pop Day! Cake pops taste like cake but look like lollipops or suckers. They are made by mixing cake crumbs with frosting, icing, or chocolate, forming them into a ball or cube and putting them on a stick, then dipping them into melted chocolate or icing before decorating them. It's an ideal way to use up leftover cake or cake crumbs, and the flavor possibilities are limitless, from vanilla and chocolate to strawberry, lemon, red velvet, and beyond.

Angie Dudley of Bakerella developed cake pops by modifying cake balls by adding a lollipop stick, candy coating, and toppings. She included a recipe for her chocolate cupcake pops in a blog post on February 1, 2008. They became popular and have since been made by people all around the world. Their popularity was accelerated after Dudley was invited to make them on The Martha Stewart Show not long after the blog post, which was followed by additional high-profile cake pop opportunities. Cake pops continued to rise in popularity in the 2010s. New York Cake Pops sold them at venues like Madison Square Garden and Yankee Stadium. Starbucks began selling cake pops in 2011. On the fourth anniversary of her post of the chocolate cupcake pops recipe, Dudley made another post and created International Cake Pop Day, designating a day to celebrate cake pops each year.
