California Wine Month

California Wine Month celebrates the state’s wines, winegrowing regions, winemakers, growers, and the broader community behind them. Observed throughout September, it coincides with the annual harvest season and highlights the cultural and economic contributions of California’s wine industry. The month was established in 2004 by the Wine Institute, which created the celebration to recognize the contributions of vintners and growers to California’s economy, culture, and lifestyle.

California’s relationship with wine stretches back more than 250 years, and the state is home to more than 100 grape varieties and wine-producing regions across its diverse landscapes. The industry’s history includes a revival following the repeal of Prohibition in 1933 and the founding of the Wine Institute in 1934. California Wine Month also looks toward the present and future by spotlighting the people who grow grapes, make wine, work in vineyards and cellars, and welcome visitors.

Throughout September, wineries host activities such as tastings, tours, harvest experiences, grape stomps, festivals, classes, and food-and-wine pairings.
