National Pancake Week
National Pancake Week celebrates the history, versatility, and continuing popularity of pancakes. The seven-day observance was created by Bisquick in 1985 and takes place during the week of Shrove Tuesday and Lent, according to Bisquick’s announcement.
Pancakes have a long culinary history. A Greek poet’s description of warm pancakes is dated to around 600 BC, while Shrove Tuesday became associated with using up dairy products before Lent around 1100 AD. In 1931, Bisquick was introduced, giving cooks a convenient way to make pancakes. Betty Crocker’s pancake history also identifies 1985 as the year Bisquick became the official sponsor of National Pancake Week.
During the week, pancakes can be enjoyed at any meal and customized with different fillings and toppings. Bisquick has suggested ideas ranging from strawberries and cream to lemon-poppy seed, blueberry-white chocolate, blackberry buttermilk, and chocolate-stuffed pancakes.
