Veganuary

Veganuary encourages people to try a vegan, plant-based diet throughout January. Participants take on the challenge for the month, typically avoiding animal products such as meat, dairy, eggs, and seafood, while exploring plant-based alternatives. The name combines “vegan” and “January.”

The campaign was co-founded by Jane Land and Matthew Glover in the United Kingdom. After discussing how to encourage more people to try veganism, they launched the first Veganuary campaign in January 2014. About 3,300 people signed up worldwide that year. Veganuary presents the challenge as a practical, non-judgmental way to learn about vegan eating, with resources such as recipes, shopping guidance, and starter information available through the organization’s website.

People participate for many different reasons, including curiosity, concern for animal welfare, interest in health, and environmental concerns. Some continue eating vegan after January, while others simply add more plant-based meals to their diets.

How to Observe Veganuary

Celebrate by trying a vegan diet for January, or by adding more plant-based meals to your routine. Plan meals ahead, explore vegan alternatives to foods you already enjoy, and learn how to identify animal-derived ingredients. You can also use the recipes, tips, and starter resources provided by Veganuary to help guide your challenge.
