National BLT Sandwich Month

National BLT Sandwich Month celebrates the bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich throughout April. A classic BLT is made with bacon, lettuce, and tomato on bread, often with mayonnaise and toast bringing the ingredients together.

The sandwich’s documented history reaches back to the early 1900s. A 1903 Good Housekeeping Everyday Cook Book recipe described a club sandwich containing bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, and turkey. Over time, the version without turkey became known as a bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich. The initials “BLT” appear to have emerged as restaurant shorthand; the acronym was in print by the mid-20th century and became widely recognized by the 1970s. After World War II, the expansion of supermarkets made fresh ingredients available year-round, helping the sandwich grow in popularity. The Nibble’s history of the BLT explores these developments and the sandwich’s many variations.

The origins of National BLT Sandwich Month itself are unclear: no exact founding date or founder has been documented. During April, enjoy the simple original or experiment with additions such as avocado, a fried egg, different breads, flavored mayonnaise, or alternative greens and tomatoes.

How to Observe National BLT Sandwich Month

Celebrate by making a BLT at home or ordering one from a local sandwich shop. Try changing the bread, lettuce, tomato, or mayonnaise, or add avocado or a fried egg for a different spin. You can also prepare several versions and invite friends or family to compare them. Don’t forget to enjoy the classic combination of bacon, lettuce, and tomato in a wrap, salad, or another creative form.
