It's National Fruit Compote Day! Compote is made by simmering fruit in sugar syrup on a stovetop. Whole or chopped pieces of fresh or dried fruit are used. By definition, compote is made with fruit, so adding "fruit" into the name is redundant. Compote is usually served warm, but can be served chilled.
Apple compote and apricot compote are two common compotes, with pears, plums, figs, berries, and rhubarb being some other fruits commonly used to make compote. Dried fruit such as raisins or prunes can be mixed with the main fruit, as can candied fruit, nuts, and coconut. Brandy, rum, wine, and liqueurs are also sometimes mixed in to make compote. Spices and flavorings are often added, with lemon zest, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, orange peel, and vanilla being typical examples. Compared to stewed fruit, compote generally has more sugar and is more syrupy.
Compote is often eaten as a dessert. It can be eaten on its own or can be topped with cream, whipped cream, ice cream, or crème fraîche. It can be used to make a parfait, and can top yogurt, cake, pancakes, French toast, and waffles. It can be a filling for crêpes or be spread on toast. As a side dish, it goes well with ham, roast pork, poultry, seafood, and cheese. It also works well as a sandwich condiment.
