National Riesling Day

National Riesling Day celebrates Riesling, an aromatic white wine made in styles ranging from bone-dry to sweet. The grape is associated with Germany’s Rhine region and is known for bright acidity, floral and fruity aromas, and flavors that can include citrus, green apple, peach, honey, and mineral notes. Its range means that “Riesling” does not necessarily mean sweet wine.

March 13 was chosen to commemorate a documented mention of the grape in a German cellar record dated March 13, 1435. According to Beverly Crandon’s overview of Riesling, Wines of Germany declared the date the grape’s birthday in 2019. Riesling is now grown in wine regions beyond Germany, including Alsace, Australia, and New York’s Finger Lakes.

Riesling’s acidity makes it a flexible partner for food. Dry styles can complement seafood, poultry, sushi, and goat cheese, while sweeter styles can balance spicy dishes. The wine can also develop more complex aromas, sometimes including petrol, as it ages.

How to Observe National Riesling Day

Celebrate by opening a bottle of Riesling and tasting its aromas and flavors. Try comparing a dry style with a sweeter one, or pair the wine with spicy food, seafood, sushi, shrimp, crab, or goat cheese. Serve it chilled, and enjoy responsibly.
