American Craft Beer Week

American Craft Beer Week celebrates small and independent U.S. craft breweries, their beers, and the communities connected to them. The week highlights the creativity, craftsmanship, and variety found among independent brewers while encouraging support for these local businesses. The Brewers Association describes the celebration as a way to bring the community together and support small businesses.

Before 2006, the observance was known as American Beer Month and was typically held in July. The Brewers Association later condensed it into a weeklong celebration; a history of the change says the first American Craft Beer Week was announced in spring 2006. Since then, it has been held for seven days beginning on the Monday before May 18.

Craft beer is associated with diverse flavors and styles, and independent breweries often serve as gathering places within their communities. The week offers an opportunity to learn more about brewing, discover beers from small producers, and appreciate the people behind them.

How to Observe American Craft Beer Week

Celebrate by visiting an independent brewery, taproom, or restaurant and trying a local craft beer. If you are of legal drinking age, sample a flight or explore a style you have not tried before. You can also host a small tasting at home, learn about the brewing process, or support a local brewery by purchasing its beer or a gift card. The Brewers Association’s celebration guide also suggests tastings, pairings, and brewery visits.
