National Blueberry Popsicle Month in September celebrates the blueberry-flavored frozen treat and honors Frank Epperson, who is credited with creating the first popsicle. According to an account from International Business Times, Epperson was 11 years old in 1905 when he accidentally left powdered soda, water, and a stirring stick outside overnight. The mixture froze, creating an icy snack on a stick.
Epperson later introduced the treat at a fireman’s ball in 1922 and sold it at an amusement park in Alameda, California. He initially called it an “epsicle,” but the name eventually became “popsicle.” Although fruit popsicles are often watery, blueberry versions can also be made creamier with ingredients such as yogurt or cream.
How to Observe National Blueberry Popsicle Month
Celebrate by enjoying a blueberry popsicle or making your own with fresh or frozen blueberries. For a creamy variation, layer blueberries and yogurt in popsicle molds before freezing. You can also learn about Frank Epperson’s accidental invention and share a blueberry-themed frozen treat with friends or family.
