National Pear Month

National Pear Month celebrates the flavor, variety, and versatility of pears throughout December. Pears can be enjoyed fresh or preserved, and their delicate flavor, buttery texture, and long storage life have made them valued fruits for thousands of years. According to USA Pears’ history of the fruit, pears were cultivated in China by around 5,000 B.C., praised by the Greek poet Homer, and later brought to America by early colonists. Pear trees eventually thrived in the Pacific Northwest, where Washington and Oregon became leading fresh-pear-producing states.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture declared December National Pear Month in 2004, according to a history of the observance. December is a fitting time to appreciate pears: USA Pears notes that the month brings an abundance and variety of pears from Washington and Oregon, including Bosc, Anjou, Bartlett, Comice, Concorde, Forelle, and Seckel varieties. The month invites everyone to give this often-overlooked fruit a place in fresh snacks, salads, desserts, preserves, and other dishes.
