Cabernet Franc Day, also known as Cab Franc Day, celebrates the Cabernet Franc grape and the wines made from it. Often used in Bordeaux-style blends, Cabernet Franc can also be made into a medium-bodied wine on its own, with flavors and aromas that may include red fruit, herbs, pepper, violet, and earth. Along with Sauvignon Blanc, it is one of the parent grapes of Cabernet Sauvignon, helping give this often-overlooked variety an important place in wine history. Decanter describes Cabernet Franc’s range of styles and regional expressions.
Lori Budd of Dracaena Wines established Cabernet Franc Day in 2015. According to Dracaena Wines’ explanation of the holiday, December 4 was chosen because it is the anniversary of Cardinal Richelieu’s death in 1642; he is believed to have transported Cabernet Franc cuttings from Bordeaux to the Loire Valley. The day offers an opportunity to give Cab Franc the spotlight, whether it appears as a single-varietal wine or in a blend.
How to Observe Cabernet Franc Day
Celebrate by opening a Cabernet Franc or a blend featuring the grape, then take time to notice its fruit, herbal, and peppery character. Compare a single-varietal wine with a blend, or taste bottles from different regions to explore how style varies. Pair it with a meal featuring roasted vegetables, mushrooms, lamb, beef, or cheese, and learn more about the grape through Dracaena Wines’ background on Cabernet Franc Day.
