National Seafood Month

National Seafood Month celebrates fish and shellfish throughout October while recognizing the people, businesses, and coastal communities connected to the seafood industry. Seafood provides lean protein, nutrients, and omega-3 fatty acids, and NOAA Fisheries describes it as an important part of a healthy diet as well as a contributor to food security and coastal economies. The month also highlights sustainable seafood, including both wild-caught and farmed products. According to NOAA Fisheries, U.S. fishermen and fish farmers work under robust environmental standards, while sustainable seafood depends on science, responsive management, and enforcement.

The holiday’s history is not consistently reported. One account says Congress designated National Seafood Month in 1990 to emphasize seafood’s place in a healthy diet and honor the industry’s economic contributions, while another says it was declared in 1958 to encourage fall seafood sales. National Day Calendar says its research could not determine the month’s origin. Regardless of its beginnings, October offers an opportunity to appreciate seafood’s variety, learn more about how it is harvested or farmed, and consider the choices that help support healthy waters and future seafood supplies.

How to Observe National Seafood Month

Celebrate by enjoying a seafood meal, cooking a fish or shellfish dish at home, or trying a species you have not tasted before. Ask a fishmonger or restaurant where its seafood comes from, and look for responsibly sourced options. You can also learn about U.S. fisheries and sustainable seafood through NOAA Fisheries’ suggested ways to celebrate, including exploring regional seafood and supporting local fishermen and seafood farmers.
