National Reuben Month

National Reuben Month celebrates the Reuben sandwich throughout March. The classic version features corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Thousand Island dressing grilled between slices of rye bread. Some versions use Russian dressing instead.

The sandwich’s origin is debated, but one account places its creation at Omaha, Nebraska’s Blackstone Hotel. According to that account, Jewish Lithuanian-born grocer Reuben Kulakofsky made the first Reuben for a weekly poker group that met at the hotel from 1920 to 1935. Hotel owner Charles Schimmel later added it to the lunch menu, helping bring the sandwich wider attention. This account of the Reuben’s history and a traditional preparation also notes that Omaha observes National Reuben Sandwich Day on March 14.

Celebrate by making or enjoying a Reuben sandwich. Layer corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Thousand Island dressing between slices of rye bread, then grill it until the bread is toasted and the cheese is melty.
