National Honey Month

National Honey Month celebrates honey, honey bees, and the beekeepers and producers who bring this sweet food to our homes. Honey is made by honey bees after they consume sugar from plants, then stored in their colonies as nourishment. September is also significant for many U.S. beekeepers because honey collection season typically concludes as bees begin preparing their hives for winter, according to the American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture.

The National Honey Board created National Honey Month in 1989 to support and recognize honey producers and beekeepers in the United States. During September, take a moment to appreciate the work behind every jar—and the honey bees that make it possible.

How to Observe National Honey Month

Celebrate by buying honey from a local producer, visiting a honey farm to learn how honey is made, or trying a flavored variety. You can also use honey in place of your usual sweetener for a day, give a jar to someone you know, or share your support for a local honey producer. These ideas are suggested by the Hillsborough Soil and Water Conservation District.
