Meat Week

Meat Week celebrates barbecued meats and the shared experience of gathering around barbecue. The observance lasts eight days in late January and early February, with brisket, ribs, pork, chicken, and other smoked, sauced, or slow-cooked meats taking center stage.

According to the Meat Week organizers, Chris Cantey and Erni Walker started the celebration in Tallahassee, Florida, in 2005. In participating cities, a “Captain” typically creates a schedule of barbecue restaurants for the first seven nights. Friends and newcomers eat together, take photos, and share the experience online. The eighth night often concludes with a bring-your-own-barbecue cookout at someone’s home.

Meat Week has also developed a “Hype Week,” when enthusiasts create graphics and videos to build excitement before the celebration begins. Each city may develop its own traditions, but the focus remains on barbecue, camaraderie, and enjoying good food together.

How to Observe Meat Week

Celebrate by joining a local Meat Week gathering when one is available and visiting its scheduled barbecue restaurants. You can also organize your own barbecue outing with friends, try several kinds of smoked or sauced meat, or host a cookout at home. Take a group photo—or a photo of your meal—and share the fun with others. Check the organizers’ information page for details about participating cities and chapters.
