National Oatmeal Month

National Oatmeal Month celebrates oatmeal throughout January, giving this simple, versatile grain a place in the spotlight. Oats are a whole grain, and common varieties include steel-cut, rolled, quick, and instant oats. They begin as oat groats and differ mainly in how they are processed: steel-cut oats are cut into pieces, while rolled oats are steamed and flattened. Instant oats are processed further for faster cooking, as The Dairy Alliance explains.

Oatmeal can be enjoyed as a warm breakfast, but oats also appear in cookies, muffins, pancakes, breads, granola, and other recipes. A 2009 post from the Whole Grains Council shows that the month was being observed by then, although the available references do not identify its origin or founder.

How to Observe National Oatmeal Month

Celebrate by preparing oatmeal with your preferred variety of oats, then adding toppings such as fresh or dried fruit, nuts, cinnamon, yogurt, or peanut butter. Try a make-ahead overnight-oats recipe, bake oatmeal into cookies or muffins, or experiment with savory oats topped with vegetables, cheese, or an egg. Share a favorite oatmeal recipe or preparation idea with someone else.
