National Hand Roll Day celebrates temaki, a style of sushi wrapped by hand in crisp nori. Unlike cut rolls, a hand roll is cylindrical or cone-shaped and filled with rice, fish, vegetables, and sauces. Its texture is best enjoyed immediately, while the seaweed is still crisp.
The holiday was founded in 2019 by Sushi Nozawa Group to celebrate the hand roll and honor Chef Kazunori Nozawa’s introduction of the cylindrical-style hand roll to the United States more than 40 years ago. July 6 was chosen because it coincides with Nozawa’s birthday. The group, which is behind SUGARFISH, KazuNori, and Nozawa Bar, opened KazuNori: The Original Hand Roll Bar in 2014, offering made-to-order hand rolls prepared with fresh fish, specially harvested seaweed, house-made sauces, and warm rice. At the counter, guests can watch the rolls being made and enjoy them while the nori is at its best. Sushi Nozawa Group’s account of the holiday describes temaki as a special experience centered on crisp nori, warm rice, and carefully prepared fillings.
How to Observe National Hand Roll Day
Celebrate by ordering a hand roll at a sushi restaurant, especially if you have never tried one before. You can also make temaki at home with nori, sushi rice, and your choice of fillings; no sushi mat is required. Eat each roll soon after it is made to enjoy the crisp seaweed, and share photos of your creations with friends.
