On National Denim Day, or Lee National Denim Day, funds are raised to support the American Cancer Society's fight against breast cancer. Participants are asked to donate $5 or more and wear jeans for the day. Or, they can donate the amount of money they otherwise would spend on a pair of jeans. The day has gone by the motto "One day, One cause, One cure." It started after three Lee Jeans employees realized breast cancer had affected all of them in some way. The jean company set a goal of raising $1 in the first year and encouraged companies to allow their workers to go "casual for a cause" by wearing jeans to work in exchange for a $5 donation. Over 3,000 businesses pledged to participate, and $1.4 million was raised. After twenty years, the fundraiser had pulled in $93 million.
