National Tartar Sauce Day

National Tartar Sauce Day celebrates the creamy, tangy condiment best known as a companion to fried fish—and as a flavorful dip for fries, fritters, and battered appetizers. It falls on the first Friday of Lent, or 44 days before Easter, making it a timely occasion to enjoy tartar sauce with seafood or experiment with other dishes. It can also add brightness to chicken and beef recipes, pasta or potato salad, and steamed vegetables. The News-Mirror describes several of these uses.

Frisch’s Big Boy founded National Tartar Sauce Day in 2017. The Cincinnati-based restaurant has a special connection to the sauce: in 1946, Dave Frisch adapted the Big Boy double-decker hamburger by replacing the original Thousand Island dressing with his homemade tartar sauce. According to Frisch’s account of its history, that specially formulated sauce became a distinctive part of the sandwich and a staple on the menu. Frisch’s began selling its tartar sauce in pint jars for take-home use in 1960, giving fans a way to enjoy it beyond the restaurant.

Celebrate by enjoying tartar sauce with fried fish, seafood, fries, fritters, or another favorite dish. You can also make a simple batch with mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish, yellow mustard, and lemon juice, using this recipe as a starting point.
