Fiber Focus Month highlights dietary fiber and encourages people to add more fiber-rich foods to their diets. Fiber comes from plant foods such as vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, grains, and seeds, and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln recommends increasing intake gradually because adding too much at once can cause discomfort. The event record identifies Fiber One as its organizer.

The observance was held in January from 1989 through 1993, then moved to February for 1994 and 1995. Its organizer, Fiber One, began with a high-fiber, low-sugar bran cereal released in 1985 and later expanded into other cereal and snack products. General Mills recounts the brand’s evolution, including its use of Fiber One cereal as an ingredient in recipes during the 1990s.

How to Observe Fiber Focus Month

Celebrate by focusing on a variety of fiber-rich foods throughout the month. Add vegetables, fruit, beans, nuts, whole grains, oatmeal, or whole-grain cereal to your meals, and make changes gradually. You might swap white rice for brown rice or quinoa, choose whole-wheat bread or pasta, or try a new recipe using Fiber One cereal.
