Commercial peanut production began in Texas around 1906, when four or five carloads were grown, threshed, and sold to a peanut oil, butter, and confectionery factory in Paris, Lamar County. Production expanded quickly: by 1909, Texas farmers harvested 48,000 acres and produced 26.4 million pounds of peanuts, according to the Texas State Historical Association. The month provides an opportunity to enjoy peanuts while learning more about the crop’s Texas story.
