Go Nuts over Texas Peanuts Month is observed throughout October and centers on the peanut’s place in Texas agriculture and food culture. Although peanuts are commonly called nuts, they are legumes that grow underground in pods.National Peanut Day offers more background on the peanut’s botanical classification and history.
Commercial peanut production began in Texas around 1906, when four or five carloads were grown, threshed, and sold to a peanut oil, butter, and confectionery factory in Paris, Lamar County. Production expanded quickly: by 1909, Texas farmers harvested 48,000 acres and produced 26.4 million pounds of peanuts, according to the Texas State Historical Association.
