National Pancake Month celebrates pancakes throughout February. Also known as hotcakes or flapjacks, pancakes are made from batter and can take many forms, from thick, fluffy stacks to thin crêpes. Pancakes have been enjoyed in various cultures for centuries, with ancient Greek and Roman versions made from ingredients such as flour, milk, olive oil, honey, and eggs.
February is also when Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, may occur. In Christian traditions, pancakes were a practical way to use up rich ingredients such as eggs, milk, butter, and sugar before Lent. The date of Shrove Tuesday changes from year to year because it falls before Ash Wednesday, while National Pancake Month remains a month-long celebration.
