Whole Grain Sampling Day

Whole Grain Sampling Day encourages people to discover the flavors and possibilities of whole grains by tasting them in meals, snacks, and baked goods. Whole grains have appeared in many forms at past observances, including quinoa, farro, bulgur, oats, and brown rice.

The first Whole Grain Sampling Day took place on April 4, 2012. It was organized by Oldways and its Whole Grains Council, which invited supermarkets, restaurants, foodservice providers, and other organizations to offer whole grain samples and encourage people to try something new. According to the council, the event was created to reduce barriers to enjoying more whole grains and has included tastings, cooking demonstrations, educational activities, and online promotions over the years. The council’s history and accomplishments page documents the event’s development.

How to Observe Whole Grain Sampling Day

Celebrate by trying a whole grain you have not eaten before, preparing a meal with quinoa, farro, bulgur, oats, brown rice, or another favorite, or sharing a small tasting with family and friends. You can also explore the Whole Grains Council’s celebration ideas and recipes for inspiration.
