National Cream Tea Day celebrates the British cream tea: scones served with jam and clotted cream alongside a pot of tea. Also known as International Cream Tea Day, it takes place on the last Friday in June and encourages people to enjoy this simple treat while raising money for charity.
The day was launched in 2015 by Rodda’s Cornish Clotted Cream and Wilkin and Sons Tiptree, which together founded the Cream Tea Society. The Society supports charity cream teas and says that more than £2 million has been raised for charities across the UK. It also donates up to 50,000 portions of jam and cream each year to help fundraising events, according to the Cream Tea Society.
Cream tea etiquette includes one famously disputed question: should the jam or the clotted cream go on the scone first? The Cornish way uses jam first and cream on top, while the Devon way places the cream first and finishes with jam. Whichever approach you prefer, National Cream Tea Day is a chance to share a delicious tea and support a worthy cause.
How to Observe National Cream Tea Day
Celebrate by making or ordering a cream tea with scones, jam, clotted cream, and tea. Host a cream tea for friends, family, or coworkers and invite donations for a charity of your choice. You can also settle the Cornish-versus-Devon debate by serving your scones both ways, then share a photo of your spread using #nationalcreamteaday. Find celebration ideas and charity information through the Cream Tea Society.
