International Tempranillo Day

International Tempranillo Day celebrates the Tempranillo grape and the full-bodied red wines made from it. Observed on the second Thursday in November, the day offers an opportunity to discover this black grape, which is native to Spain and is also grown in wine regions around the world.

The name Tempranillo comes from the Spanish word temprano, meaning “early,” a reference to the grape’s early ripening. Tempranillo is also known by names including Tinto Fino and Cencibel in Spain, and Aragonez or Tinta Roriz in Portugal. Its wines may have cherry, plum, and dried-fig aromas and flavors, with earthy notes such as tobacco, leather, and herbs. They pair well with foods including grilled meats, tacos, burritos, and tomato-based dishes.

The Tempranillo Advocates Producers and Amigos Society (TAPAS) organized the first International Tempranillo Day in 2011 to celebrate the grape and introduce more people to Tempranillo wine. According to one account, Thursday was chosen because restaurants and bottle shops are particularly busy over the weekend, leaving them more time to participate on Thursday. Vino Social’s overview of the day also describes it as an opportunity to open a bottle, share the experience, and learn more about Tempranillo.

How to Observe International Tempranillo Day

Celebrate by enjoying a glass of Tempranillo, perhaps alongside grilled meat, tacos, burritos, or another tomato-based dish. Compare wines made from the grape, learn about its Spanish and Portuguese names, or host a small dinner and tasting for friends. If you share the experience online, use #TempranilloDay or #Tempranillo. Please drink responsibly.
